Unique shock problem…

I have a new problem with my swinger swap. The z1000 shock is too long to fit with the vfr swingarm / triangle. Also, the hole where the shock passes through is too far forward. I might be able to use a really short shock… but the kickstand mount would still be in the way - don’t really want to move it either. The other idea that I have is to mount the shock outboard of the swingarm. It would take some pretty crazy linkage, but I think it would work. Here is a picture of where the shock would be. I’m really open to ideas at this point also.

What about an air strut? Mount it at an angle from the swingarm to the lower frame brace. Then mount the tank through the swingarm. Anybody have expirience with air suspension? I ride the bike hard… how would this setup be for wheelies and shit?

Hey guys, as much as i HATE and dont want to do this, i need to sell my bike…

2002 kawi zx9r
has approx 18k miles, dont have the stock speedo anymore but i know its definitely not over that.

last year i had the bike re-jetted with a factory pro jet kit from Tommy D (checked flag cycles), while he was in there i had him check my valves and he said everything was right to the manufacturers spec. this thing runs like a beast, very mechanically sound. always ran fully synthetic 10w-40 and changed it every 1500-2000 miles. the bike does have a couple cosmetic flaws unfortunetly, there is a small dent in the tank (i can explain the story if your really interested), the front fender has a bunch of spider cracks, and the tail has some boot marks from the previous owner. this bike has NEVER been down though, i will promise ya that. I only fightered it because i love the look of naked sport bikes and i love to actually have something different from everyone else, its what makes it mine…anyways off to the goodies…

Hello all

i’ve been lurking here for a bit, getting ideas and learning about fighters

I’ve been riding for about 6 years now, mostly on my dad’s classic BMW air heads (a ‘71 /5), but just bought a bike for myself. A ‘92 FZR 600 for tooling around campus and the local canyons

i bought it with the fairings banged up a bit, so i tore them off the first day, but i’m still waiting on some headlight ideas to get rid of the cowling around the stock headlights

i’ve also gotten rid of the under seat plastic, along with the rear fender and turn signals have been replaced with LED’s. Bar end mirrors have been ordered too, should be in soon

i generally know my way around cars and a shop, and i’m not afraid to chop shit off, so this fighter project should be pretty fun

any recommendation on a cheap, but fairly good headlight? My college budget can’t have me spending too terribly much

Hey all

Just thought I’d post some piccies up of my bike. Still in the building process, got lots left to do.

And this one was taken at the w/e at a local bike show. Had to put the standard sets back on in order to have the NOS bottle on.

Lots more to come over this winter. I’m going to take off the JMC swinger and bolt on a spondon, the same one as coxy has on his. I was also looking at the same tail end, but it might seem that I would be copying him LOL Either that or see if a 996 racing end would fit…hmmm there’s an idea

I’ll list all the mods if you like, but she is kicking 190 ponies to the tarmac :rock:

This was a really nasty looking sport tourer that I ripped apart. Built the tailsection from a BMW seatpan, made the fairing shield, made the subframe, molded chunks of the old lower fairing onto the gas tank, dropped the front end, major major major amounts of carb modding and jetting to make it work without the airboxes, shortie pipes with no packing, hardware store orange spray paint.

subframe fabbing..steel versus aluminum

OK, so here’s the deal…I am planning on potentially building a new subframe for my SV…for an upcoming tail swap.

BUT, the snag is that although I’d like to build it out of aluminum…I have no one local that can weld it. If I make it outta steel, i have a guy here at work, that is a poet with the welder for steel.

Now we all know for the same thickness, steel is stronger than aluminum….but also heavier. So, what do you gents think of using a slightly thinner wall steel product, versus whatever the wall thickness of the stock aluminum subframe is, to make a new subframe, with about the same strength, but not too much more weight??

Any input appreciated. DZ

More exhaust changes.

So the temporary “tip” (I’ll call it) blew off while I was going to a job yesterday. I’m not sure exactly when it happened as I didn’t notice until I got to a stop light. Anyhow, I made a new, hopefully permanent, muffler. Again, I went to the auto parts store and did it on the cheap. I used one of those short, fat, ricer cans and made an additional baffle/tip with a piece of pipe-adapter.

So here are the pics of the exhaust:

This is the can that I had on the bike up at fighter fest.

Then the next version was this tip I made on the road in Jersey. What I did was hammer-in a pipe-adapter that I cut up and bent in to make a baffle, then slid the chrome tip over it. This fell out because I had tried to tap it into the end of the header, but I didn’t tap it in very far as I only had my little toolkit with me at the time. Anyway, it did it’s job. It got me home and that was it’s primary purpose.

And this is the can I put on last evening. My two main goals were to attach something on the header that would sit under the bike, because that looks kick-ass, and if possible to have something with a deeper tone. With the can at FF and the tip I had made, both sounded very buzzy. I wanted something that sounded less like a mosquito and more like a bumblebee.

I started with a short but fat ricer can, which has some perforated pipe and muffling material in it, but was too wide-open at the end to really do much other than look shinny. I fixed that by making a baffled tip which I hammered into the end of the can. I then used this “muffler-weld” stuff, which looks to be some sort of clay blended with a resin/epoxy to seal up both where I hammered-in the tip, and where the can attached to the header.

Here’s some more detail:

The tone of the exhaust is much nicer now. At idle and low RPM it sounds like a 1000 or maybe even a twin or triple. The tone of the exhaust note raises as the RPMs do, but it’s no longer buzzy which was one of my goals. I’ll probably end-up painting the whole thing flat black; but for now it’s doing it’s job.
